Help Choose My Wedding Cake

January 31, 2009 · 16 comments

My wedding is in five months, in Kona, as you may already know.  Being a big believer in the mantra, “Proper planning prevents poor performance,” we’ve been planning it for almost two years now.  However, I have to admit, we haven’t settled on a wedding cake.  If you know us really well, you’re saying, “The horror!“  Recently, my fiancee sent her list of considerations in an effort to get me to commit to one of the cake designs.  We’re lucky, one of my aunts/aunties can make it for us, so really the hard part is deciding on the cake.

Yellow cake is our favorite, so that will be on the inside. But what about the outside? Here are the choices she gave me:

  • 1.  Pretty ivory frosting with fancy blue swirly designs and pearl dots.

The stunning four-tiered ivory wedding cake was decorated with a light blue pattern that matched the lace on Courtney

  • 2.  Dark blue ribbon…minus the green flowers, of course.

Each tier of Marc and Kimberly

  • 3.  White frosting with blue flowers.

Four tiers of alternating chocolate cake with raspberry filling, and white torte cake with strawberries and white chocolate mousse. The outside was accented with edible hydrangeas.

  • 4.  Simple white squiggly design with blue bow.

Dessert at Rachelle and David's wedding was tiers of white cake, chocolate cake, and a top tier of tiramisu (served at the post-wedding brunch), with a blue sugar ribbon to match the bride's gown.

  • 5.  Plain blue frosting with white trim.

Joni and Chip cut into a four-tiered buttercream cake that was frosted in pale blue and decorated with their monogram. Inside, the cake was made of white cake, pound cake, and key lime.

  • 6.  Tiffany blue boxes.

Tying the Tiffany blue color palate together was the wedding cake: a three-tier confection with strawberry filling and cream-cheese frosting made to resemble three stacked Tiffany & Co. boxes wrapped with a large white fondant ribbon that cascaded down the side of the cake.

I really liked #6, the Tiffany boxes, but she seemed to think that’s the lowest of the choices.  Note that she’s not a fan of Tiffany’s.  So, would you help me out?  Which one do you like, and why? The why will be the most helpful part for me.

Mahalo!

We just stumbled on your post but your friends have a lot of time on their hands. PS we like 1 and 6 and some of your guy friends are kind of rude

tiffany blue is cute but instead of boxs pretty elgant pillow cake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And don't forget to take advantage of the local
coffee some of the best in the world.

No. 1 no. 1 no. 1 no. 1
It's a beautiful beautiful classic.
The rest seem overdone.
God bless you both.

Capsun, I'd go with cake #1 because its elegant and decorative.

I have to say that I really am liking cake #1. I think the white cake is a very simple and elegant look, but the blue accents and details give it a little something extra.

...and I have to agree with quilly, #2 does look like someones Aunt's hat!

Everyone: On closer inspection, I think she may have sorted them in her preferred order already...sneaky!

quilly: We actually use a similar scale, with negatives, for most things like this. Lots of calculus involved with it. Good advice on the wording, but I think she just wants me to make the final decision to know I'm involved and engaged (no pun inteded).

Damon, Thom, and Laurelle: Thanks for the congrats.

Damon: Thanks for the advice about freezing properly.

Thom: Uh-oh, I was supposed to ask her if I could post this? Too late.

laurelle: OMG, when you said personalize, I really did think with capsun.org! You know my OCD tendencies all too well.

Georgette: Wow, my first comment from you. Thanks so much. I knew a post like this would get new people to comment. Thanks for backing me up, too.

Fran: Oh no, more choices.

Jackie & girasoli: I guess you two put #1 over the top as the favorite

I like number 1 the best but would be happy with any except numbers 2 & 5.

1 or 3. i preferred 3 from the get go but was persuaded by others' votes for 1. it kind of depends on the style of the rest of your wedding. if it's untraditional and modern, 4 or even 2 (i would go with flowers for that punch of fun color, but hey it's your wedding). hell no on 5 or 6. i like tiffany's but a tiffany's wedding cake is just tacky.

I like cake number 4, but I agree with the other commenter about the symmetry.

I am a Tiffany's fan, so I like #6 too, but if I were the bride, I'd choose #1. Simple, elegant, classy.

#4 white-on-white is elegant, keep that blue frosting for the 1st yr anniv. I'm with Quilly, either more or less symmetrical-- either perfectly centered and level or completely off-kilter, no moderation. I vote for completely off-kilter, you're young and fun :)

Knowing you tho, you'd be happier with it precisely centered. Maybe with the square cakes, but in the white-on-white frosting. All squared up, not angled. Taller rather than wider. And straight lines.

You can personalize the squigglies, btw. I like the pikos right now tho. just don't put http://capsun.org m'kay?

I must say it is going to look pretty plain from across the room and in photos unless Aunty uses something like pearl to catch the light and the photog is prepared for it too!

Congrats, bout-dam-time, and remember, it's just a cake. :)

Capsun: First of all, I too send my heartiest congratulations to you and your soon to be wife. As I have never been married I can't tell you what the process is like. But I was aghast that you posted this, actually. I would think that this is between you and your bride to be. I'm amazed that she even consented to letting you post about this. LOL. I don't mean to sound rude or harsh, but your wedding is yours and hers alone and to that extent you should do what you both want to do and not even solicit opinions. This will be your day and the start of a whole new beginning for the both of you so start it off right and whichever one you choose will be the correct choice. I agree with Damon, it's a real small part of the wedding and the only real significance of the cake is to smear a piece of it in each others faces for good pictures for your wedding album. Congrats again.

P.S. I vote for #1 (I've thrown away my pedastal LOL)

First off... congratulations on your pending marriage.

Second off... Save yourself the grief and let your better half plan the cake.

Third off... make you sure you smear that cake in your wifes face for making you be the decision maker on the cake if you are required.

Fourth off... the cake is just a small part of a wedding, I've always thought it was over rated.

Fifth off... If I were to get married again... I think I would just elope to Vegas because it was so hard to keep my "invite" list to a minimum while keeping costs down.

And finally - If you do save the top layer of the cake for your one year anniversary as my wife and I did... Make sure you protect it so that it will at least be edible a year later... Ours had mean freezer burn and was unedible. Ended up taking up freezer space for an entire year and didn't even eat it.

Congrats!

If those blue dots are plastic (they were at one wedding I attended) #1 is a potential lawsuit. Other than that, it is simple, elegant and quite attractive.

#2 is dead out. It looks like somebody's Auntie's hat!

#3 is simple and elegant. I would serve it right side up. (What a horrid photo!)

#4 would be much more to my liking if it were either less or more symmetrical.

#5 plain -- looks like no one wanted to be bothered with decorating the cake -- and those initials are tacky.

#6 -- I agree with your fiancee. This particular choice looks like avarice. "Bring me gifts!"

Truth to tell, I lean more toward the less traditional, but if I have to pick one of these, I guess that leaves me with #1 if it's safe -- or #3.

The two of you can use the numbers method for choosing -- a 1 to 5 scale, with 1 being, "I love it" and 5 being, "Don't expect me at the reception if that is there, too." Then see how your numbers compare. OR, you could just say, "I'm not marrying the cake, pick one and lets get on with it." Which you might want to phrase in a much more diplomatic way. ;)
